Six ways to clean a frame.

Spatial, temporal and block-based denoisers, built into one effect. Pick the trade you can live with: speed, texture, or motion.

The short version: HQDN3D is the fast default, ATAdenoise is for static scenes, NLMeans protects textures, FFTdnoiz balances speed and quality, BM3D is the single-frame heavyweight, and BM4D is the reference when you have time and motion vectors.

How to read the bars

Speed and quality are relative, not absolute benchmarks: five dots means the fastest or cleanest end of this set. Motion shows whether the algorithm needs motion compensation to avoid ghosting.

A decision tree in five questions

Answer in order; the first branch that matches is your starting point. You can always stack a second algorithm in another slot.

01. Is there movement in the frame?

NoInterviews, locked-off shots, slow push-ins: go to question 2.
Yes, a lotSports, concerts, handheld: enable Motion Compensation and run Analyze Motion. Then BM4D for quality, or HQDN3D / ATAdenoise for speed.
Yes, moderateStart with HQDN3D or FFTdnoiz. If you see trails, move Balance left and raise the Temporal Gate.

02. How strong is the noise?

MildNoise only in the shadows: HQDN3D with a moderate Denoise value.
MediumFFTdnoiz, or HQDN3D in the first slot with BM3D in the second.
HeavyHigh ISO, night footage: BM3D or BM4D.

03. What matters more: speed or quality?

SpeedDrafts, lots of footage: HQDN3D or FFTdnoiz.
QualityFinal render of a hero shot: BM3D or BM4D.

04. Do textures and small detail matter?

YesSkin, hair, fabric, foliage: NLMeans or BM3D. HQDN3D eats them faster than the rest.
NoFlat backgrounds, graphics, interviews: anything, starting with HQDN3D.

05. Will you run Analyze Motion?

YesThe whole temporal and block-based arsenal opens up: ATAdenoise, BM4D and the temporal half of HQDN3D.
NoStay spatial: HQDN3D, NLMeans, FFTdnoiz, BM3D. Everything works; static scenes just end up less clean.
